Specialist relationship support

Communication and recurring conflict

When the same conversation keeps ending in the same painful place, understanding the pattern may be a useful starting point.

The pattern can become the problem

One person may press for answers while another retreats to avoid conflict. The more one pushes, the more the other withdraws. Both can feel unheard and alone, even when each is trying to protect something important.

Couples counselling can explore how disagreements begin, how each person responds, what happens to emotional safety and what supports repair.

What we might explore

  • How you recognise the early signs of escalation.
  • The feelings and needs underneath familiar reactions.
  • Ways to listen and speak without further increasing threat.
  • Building more workable approaches to conflict and repair.
  • The influence of earlier relationship experiences.

We have developed a longer reader about the pursuer–withdrawer pattern, which is available through our connected resources.
