Research-informed relationship support

Gottman-informed couples work

Our work with couples and our Seven Principles Retreat draw on research associated with John and Julie Gottman, including relationship patterns, friendship, conflict and repair.

Understanding what helps relationships

The Gottmans’ work provides a way of thinking about how couples remain connected, manage differences and build a shared life. It includes practical concepts that can help people notice what happens between them and experiment with more helpful responses.

Within counselling, any approach needs to respond to the couple and their circumstances. Research-based tools are useful, but they are not a substitute for understanding the individuals in the room.

Topics we may explore

  • Building friendship and understanding one another.
  • Recognising patterns of criticism, defensiveness or withdrawal.
  • Responding constructively when conflict escalates.
  • Repairing after difficult conversations.
  • Shared purpose, meaning and intentional connection.

Gottman training and titles

Our counselling and relationship education draw on Gottman research and professional learning. This does not indicate certification as a Certified Gottman Therapist.

Training language

Training in Gottman-related approaches and certification as a Certified Gottman Therapist are distinct. This website does not describe either Jefferson or Katie as a Certified Gottman Therapist.

Counselling and the Seven Principles Retreat

The Gottman-informed educational work at Querencia takes place in a different setting: teaching in a small group, private exercises for each couple and time away together. That retreat is not couples counselling.
