Why two counsellors?
Our couples work is distinctive because you meet with both Jefferson and Katie. We aim to understand the different experiences you bring and what happens between you when a conversation becomes difficult, a need is missed or trust has been affected.
The purpose is not to decide which partner is right or wrong. It is to understand the relationship more accurately and work towards healthier responses and choices.

Reasons couples come to us
- Recurring arguments and difficulties communicating.
- Emotional distance or a loss of connection.
- Trust concerns, secrecy or betrayal.
- Preparing for marriage or adjusting to a new life stage.
- Changes associated with parenting or family circumstances.
- Questions about separation, reconciliation or the future of the relationship.
- A desire to strengthen a relationship before difficulties take hold.
What to expect
Both partners have an opportunity to describe their experience. Drawing on Gottman-informed ideas and emotionally focused approaches, we help couples notice recurring patterns, understand what sits beneath conflict and practise healthier responses. Where useful, sessions include practical skills and exercises to try between appointments.
Sometimes we may suggest individual appointments alongside couples work. When these are appropriate, the arrangements for information sharing and confidentiality are discussed clearly.
Counselling does not guarantee a couple will remain together. It can help you understand the relationship, approach decisions with care and reduce destructive patterns.
Confidentiality and safety
In couples counselling, both people are clients in the joint process. Private disclosures and one-to-one contact may affect the work together, so we explain how this is handled before or during the first appointment. Where coercion, threats or violence make it unsafe for someone to participate freely, couples counselling may not be suitable.
